Birding Netherlands tour Zuidlaardermeer 3-6-2018

Birding Netherlands excursion Zuidlaardermeer 3 June 2018

Birding excursion report Zuidlaardermeer 3 June 2018

Because Andrea was still too ill today to perform this bird excursion, I once again stroked my heart with my hand and also performed this excursion (Martin).
In this case the excursion was a family trip, the bird excursion was booked especially for grandpa. The company consisted of grandfather and grandmother, children and grandchildren, where the age of the children varied from stroller to adolescent age. Grandpa already had quite a bit of experience with bird watching. He started it in 1952, but had done less in recent years. For him it was also a feast of recognition. And I could tell that he had done this more often. Also the calls and singing of many birds were not strange to him. The rest of the company clearly had less experience, but also for them it was an instructive day.

The start of the birdwatching excursion

We had arranged at 10.00 in the parking lot of Paviljoen de Leine. And the first participants arrived in time. Since they had to come all the way from the west of the country and even from Germany it was for them an ‘early from the feather’ story. Especially the youth appeared to have had a hard time with it. Because there was already a good ride on it, it was decided to first use the Pavilion for coffee and a sanitary stop. After this we went on the road. This excursion was specifically selected for them because the hikes were not too long and there was also a buggy.

Rest in Leinwijk

What everyone immediately noticed was the relative peace and large bird richness in this area. Everywhere you could hear the different reed birds calling and singing. And the black Terns come here so close to you that you could almost touch them. The reed bunts also showed themselves beautifully. All the way through the telescope that is always a party.
Also nice was the cuckoo who halfway in a tree top sat down and quietly showed. This provided evidence that it was not a cuckoo clock that was heard, as someone thought. The general opinion of the participants was that it is not a really beautiful bird, but a rather boring gray one. Fortunately, there were also more colorful birds, such as different types of ducks and a redshank. The latter was already looking well foraging (looking for food). And of course the young coots did a ducks, which were present everywhere in the area, also well with the participants.

The lookout tower

A few garganey showed up well from the observation tower. And when a male harrier went reasonably close by, the party was complete. We checked for a moment whether the beavers could be seen, but unfortunately they were still lying on one ear in their castle.

Birding Netherlands excursion Zuidlaardermeer De Leine and Kikoman
Leinwijk and Kikoman

After the observation tower we went back over the shell path along the Kikoman. Here a few barnacle geese came flying low. And at the end of the walk we saw a sparrow hawk, hunting for a songbird.

For the family it was enough at that time, and they let the other spots shoot at the Zuidlaardermeer. All in all, this (shortened) excursion also provided a nice species list, everyone turned out to be very satisfied and had learned a lot. And grandpa? He has the taste completely and wants to do this more often, right he has 😉
